Having lost the lead when the gearbox failed on the #19 Ferrari 512S he shared with Arturo Merzario, Mario Andretti jumped into the #21 Ferrari 512S of Ignazio Giunti/Nino Vaccarella in the final hours. After unlapping himself, he caught and passed the race leading #48 Porsche 908 of Peter Revson and Steve McQueen before pitting, narrowly retained the lead, and then won by over 20 seconds.
